This is a touching story told by a little girl named Gabby, as she was going through the foster care system. This story is so beautifully told that it actually made me tear up! The book is beautifully illustrated with real photographs and drawings and is laid out so that we follow Gabby and her doll Bessie as they go from place to place hoping to find her forever home. During this time, Gabby makes homes from materials around her for Bessie and these homes are often taken away from her, but Gabby never gives up and makes new homes for Bessie. We are made to feel her fear, sadness and despair throughout this journey, as well as her surprise and happiness when she finally ends up with a kind and caring woman who wants to adopt her! I was cheering and crying at the end of this story! I think you will be, too!
This book did a wonderful job of explaining what the foster system is and how it works for children. The children who are lucky enough to live in loving homes will empathize with Gabby and hopefully see how fortunate they are. For those who are already in the foster system, they will see themselves in this story and perhaps this story will bring them some hope that they, too, will someday find their forever homes. Kudos to Author, Jennifer Aicher, for sharing this heartwarming story with the world!
