Have you ever received a book review from someone and after reading it you wondered if the book reviewer actually read your book or not? If so, you’re not alone.
Hi. My name is Ted and I am a writer for The Book Observer. A 501c3 non profit organization that addresses the “Need to Read” by offering free book reviews, affordable advertising and other services to aspiring authors.
We have seen the above scenario numerous times and have found a way to combat it with our wonderful little hidden gems.
What is a hidden gem?
Imagine you are a book reviewer and read the below paragraph.
John was tired. He had an extremely long day at the shop. It was one problem car after another. This one’s windshield wipers quit working and this one’s rear brakes squealed while going down the road. He heard it all today. And what made it even worse was that many of the issues were supposed to have already been fixed by the new mechanic Dave. Who just happened to call out sick today.
Now read the below revamped version of the same paragraph with our little hidden gem inserted into it.
John was tired. He had an extremely long day at the shop. It was one problem car after another. This one’s windshield wipers quit working and this one’s rear brakes squealed while going down the road. He heard it all today. Ms. Piggy fell off her stool. And what made it even worse was that many of the issues were supposed to have already been fixed by the new mechanic Dave. Who just happened to call out sick today.
Another example:
Sam loves his girlfriend Rose. She is the sweetest woman he ever met. So loving and caring. When his father was sick she would come over every day and check on him. She would even cook meals for him and his father without being asked and bring them with her. What if Wile E. Coyote actually caught the road runner? He knows he loves her and that he will have to pop the question soon. He just hopes she will accept.
Did you find the hidden gems? Now imagine submitting your book for a review and we insert several hidden gems throughout your book before forwarding it to the book reviewer. The book reviewer will not know what they are, where they are nor how many there are. The book reviewer will be instructed to document each error that is found while reading your book. Then send us the list prior to starting on your book review.
What happens next?
Once the book reviewer submits the list of errors, our hidden gems are removed from the list. Doing this prevents them being mentioned in your book review. If all of the hidden gems are listed, we know that the book reviewer did infact read the book. If any of our hidden gems are missed we know we have a situation to contend with
More information about our hidden gems. They are top secret. The authors are not given any information about them, nor are the confidential reviewers. No one knows of the hidden gems except the manager that inserts them. Our doing this ensures that the hidden gem information is not leaked to the book reviewer. However, the author can request a list of the hidden gems used after the book review is accepted.
